These wild thistles have always fascinated me, and I took this photograph to study their design. This photograph explores the delicate contrast between the rugged resilience of wild flora and a soft, minimalist aesthetic. By isolating a single blooming thistle against a textured, parchment-toned backdrop, the image transforms a common, prickly wildflower into a subject of elegant simplicity. The vibrant, bashful pink hue of the blossom stands out in sharp detail against the muted, high-key background, highlighting the intricate geometry of its crown and the sharp, defensive spikes below. Through this painterly, fine-art approach, the piece invites viewers to appreciate the quiet, understated beauty found in the untamed elements of nature.
Annie was born and raised in Montana, growing up on her family's ranch in the beautiful Smith River Valley. Growing up in Montana's wild and beautiful Landscape led to her deep love of nature and all things rural. Annie attended the Art Institute of Colorado and lived in Denver Colorado until the completion of her Interior Design degree in 2002. After working in that field for several years, Annie moved back to Montana and began her own business, focusing on her ever-growing love of photography. She began traveling the backroads and wilderness of Montana and the Rocky Mountain region and selling her photos professionally in galleries, shops, and online. She primarily searches for rural Landscapes, old barns, abandoned farmhouses, and occasionally wildlife she encounters. Her work as been featured in HGTV, Better Homes and Gardens, and featured in three books on emerging artists of the United States. She currently lives in Billings, Montana, and takes several trips during the year to gather new images.
