Badlands Climbing Bighorn Sheep Blue Hour

Can you spot the bighorn sheep? I captured this ewe and her young lamb carefully making their way across the rugged rock formations during blue hour at Pinnacles Overlook in Badlands National Park near Wall, South Dakota. Watching them climb across the steep terrain was incredible. While the loose rock felt almost as slippery as ice under my own feet, they moved with remarkable confidence and agility.

The soft light after sunset casts cool blue tones across the sharply eroded landscape, while faint touches of pink linger in the clouds overhead. Layers of mudstone, sandstone, claystone, and other colorful rock formations create the dramatic scenery that makes the Badlands unlike anywhere else in the United States.

Seeing this mother and lamb so effortlessly navigate the rugged cliffs was a memorable reminder of how perfectly adapted bighorn sheep are to this harsh yet beautiful landscape. It's a moment I was grateful to witness and capture.
