Piece description from the artist
I captured this photograph looking down on the Antelope House cliff dwelling ruins from the North Rim Drive overlook in Canyon de Chelly National Monument near Chinle, Arizona. Tucked beneath towering sandstone walls, these ancient structures blend seamlessly into the canyon, revealing the ingenuity of the people who built them.
Constructed by the Ancestral Puebloans between the 12th and 13th centuries, the stone ruins feature multi-room living spaces and carefully crafted masonry designed for protection and natural climate control. Named for the faint antelope pictographs painted on the cliff above, Antelope House remains one of the best-preserved examples of early Native American architecture.
Once home to thriving farming communities, these dwellings supported daily life, crop cultivation, and ceremonial practices within kivas. Today, they stand as a powerful reminder of the culture, resilience, and enduring legacy etched into the canyon walls.
