Ancestral Mummy Cave Cliffside Community

Piece description from the artist

This historic cliff dwelling once held the thriving life of the Ancestral Puebloans (formerly called Anasazi) during the 13th and 14th centuries. The town-like section of the ruins reveals a complex arrangement of interconnected rooms and buildings nestled within the protective alcove, forming what appears to be a compact vertical village carved into the sandstone wall.

Clusters of masonry dwellings, storage rooms, and living spaces line the recess, their weathered stone walls still preserving the layout of daily life high above the canyon floor. The layered construction and varying room sizes hint at generations of growth, adaptation, and community within this sheltered space. Today, the remains at Mummy Cave in Canyon de Chelly National Monument, near Chinle, Arizona, USA, stand as a powerful reminder of a once-vibrant cliffside town that balanced resilience, culture, and ingenuity in the heart of the canyon.
