Along the Great Western Trail, plein air

Piece description from the artist

I aimed to capture the wide-open expanse and warm, late-day colors that I often see along the Great Western Trail (DuPage County, Illinois) especially the way the low sunlight ignites the late-summer or prairie grass in the foreground. I used thick, choppy brushstrokes in the field to suggest movement and texture, contrasting that with the softer, more subdued line of the distant trees and the hazy sky above, which I feel balances the scene beautifully. Painting the horizontal layers—grass, forest, and sky—allowed me to focus on the shift in light and color from the vibrant, golden field right up to the pale, cloud-dusted blue of the upper atmosphere.

About James Tipton

Carol Stream, IL

James Tipton’s art speaks to the timeless connection between land, memory, and identity. A native of Illinois, his work is shaped by the vast landscapes of DuPage County’s woods and forest preserves, where he has spent countless hours exploring. At the same time, his Native American heritage and childhood visits to the Cherokee farmlands of his family in Oklahoma imbue his paintings with a deep sense of place and history. These rich, layered memories transcend time, allowing his work to evoke both personal reflection and universal themes of connection to nature and home.

Drawing inspiration from these local landscapes, Tipton’s paintings offer more than a representation of place—they invite the viewer into a living, breathing experience of the natural world in all its ordinary beauty. Whether capturing the quiet solitude of a forest preserve trail or the open expanse of farmland, his work resonates with the enduring allure of spaces that are both familiar and eternal.

In addition to his traditional works, Tipton reinterprets his paintings through digital transformations, creating new permutations of familiar landscapes. These reimagined pieces suggest infinite perspectives on the eternal, capturing the boundless, ever-changing essence of the natural world. Each iteration reveals a different facet of the places that inspire him, offering an ongoing exploration of time, space, and memory. Through this process, Tipton crafts timeless works that not only honor the past but also suggest the endless potential of how the manifold splendor of nature can be expressed both now and in new ways yet to be.
