Along Johnson Creek III

Piece description from the artist

My current body of work references how I see and experience the mountains and how I explore the feeling of being present in nature. My creative process strives to integrate the spontaneity of the nature and is based on my experience exploring the backcountry. Hiking enables me to become fully immersed in the moment— focusing on my body, breath, surroundings, and destination. While ascending, mountain contours flood my field of vision. Form, color, and shape to surround me, and I am consumed by the vastness of space. Line allows me to study the landscape at a distance; texture permits me to investigate my surroundings more deeply.

About Lorelle Rau

Boise, ID

Lorelle Rau is a contemporary collage artist, who uses cut paper and appropriated imagery to investigate concepts ranging from nature and place to personal experiences. Rau’s harmonious compositions piece together snippets of found paper and appropriated imagery to create graceful linear vistas and abstract scenes that coordinate color, texture, and shape with balanced intention. Her process is guided by an intuitive context in which these elements come together; adding and extracting forms, expertly bringing line and detail into play within the landscape.

Rau earned her MA in Arts Administration from the Savannah College of Art and Design; BA in Studio Art and a BS in Arts Management with a Minor in Business from Appalachian State University. She is originally from Fort Lauderdale, FL but currently lives and works in Boise, Idaho.
