Piece description from the artist
A cute African crowned crane, part of the Balearica pavonina species, with it's golden feathery crown that sticks up and out around its head stands with a pose. The striking contrast of their bare pink-and-white cheek patches and dark blue black feathers adds to their elegance, while their long, sinuous necks sway gently as they search for food. These cranes thrive in wetlands like this, but their tranquil presence belies a somber reality, rapid habitat loss and illegal trapping have led to alarming population declines. Though a symbol of beauty and resilience, the African crowned crane faces an uncertain future, already vanishing from places like Nigeria. This one, along with a few others are protected in a natural habitat in Orlando, Florida.
