About Rene Griffith

Indialantic, FL

The third of eight children, Rene Griffith, was born in the Canal Zone to a Panamanian mother and an American father. The family relocated to Florida and Rene grew up in Eau Gallie, a small coastal town in central Florida. Rene always knew she wanted to be an artist and had an unstoppable curiosity about the world around her. At the age of 12 she received her first Brownie camera and began staging and photographing scenes to tell her stories. In 6th grade she sold her first painting (a watercolor of a pelican) for $5 and her dream of becoming an artist was reinforced.

But life got in the way and creating art was put on hold. Late in life Rene went to college and received her master's degree in Business and Technology from the University of Miami. After college she worked as a technical writer and then started her own marketing, communications, and graphic design business. Always with a burning desire to become an artist, she moved to San Francisco, rented a large studio and began to experiment with various mediums.

Now her artwork reflects her varied interests and her desire to explore new ways to tell a visual story. Her paintings represent her ongoing interest and exploration of storytelling. She often begins with photography but then takes her images beyond ordinary representation. It's exciting for her to bring together her photography and her love of painting in a new way. Her mixed-media paintings are reminiscent of an earlier era yet are also unmistakably contemporary.

In addition to her photography and mixed-media paintings, Rene began stretching herself even further artistically in the mid 2000's by painting abstracts on large canvases. She's especially interested in color and design elements and continues to be inspired by artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Diebenkorn, and Wayne Thiebaud and other contemporary abstract expressionists.

Rene travels whenever possible, always with camera in hand looking for and photographing subjects that have character and a story to tell. When she's at home you'll find her at her easel in her Indialantic, Florida studio creating artworks to share with the world. She has shown her works in solo and group exhibitions in California and Florida. Her artwork is included in many private and corporate collections worldwide.
