When the dirt is ours

When the Dirt is Ours

Piece description from the artist

Things seem to build themselves sometimes.

To me, it is all a life riot, a continuous chain of war, birth, growth, dominion, death, and more life. Everything exchanges energy with everything and this is a great equalizer. Strangely, humans want to stand apart from these basic truths and we are often made uncomfortable by the notions of wildness and chaos. We feel this way despite the fact that we are some of its very products. This is an obvious disconnect between the fact that we observe and construct theories. We must dismantle the tired point of view that we, the organized and squeaky-clean humans are a civilizing agent against the dark, many legged and evil lair of "other creatures". Why aren't bacteria, ozone, or sparrows civilizing agents? For the first time in our history, we need to make a true effort to remove ourselves from our strange and isolating pedestal. We are all equals in this life and world.

About Molly Gunther

Pittsburgh, PA

Molly Gunther was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1975.

Using paint, she tries to grow connections between human life and nature by juxtaposing the two forces as equals. To Molly, life is a continuous chain of war, birth, growth, dominion, death and more life; everything exchanges energy with everything, and this relationship provides an equalizer. More specifically, her work aims to place human life in the same context as nature, rather than above it.

With this in mind, Molly uses traditional landscape imagery not as a romantic notion, but as the perfect place to explore the inherent equality of living here. For Molly, paint is an essential medium for her to explore this idea of equalization. In doing so, she attempts to utilize paints in their truest forms and allow them to drip, glide, pool up, and form impenetrable walls of opacity.
