The River Banks of Le Loir

Piece description from the artist

In France this past Summer, I was hoping to do some open-air sketching, which means drawing outside. This idea, especially when on a vacation, when life moves at a slower pace, sounds fun, but it didn’t work. Every time I saw something I wanted to draw, I was busy or unprepared.
Eventually, I gave up my idea of open-air drawing, because it was too complicated. Instead I took pictures with my phone, which is always available!
As a result, I practiced a new drawing technique called “Thumbnails”, which requires a small quick sketch. I like it because I am not good at drawing, and it is simple enough for me not to mess up. I suggest this technique for those like me who are not good at drawing. Also, while I have infinite patience for painting, I have very little patience for sketching so the small scale is quick and easy to draw.
“Resting Under the Weeping Willow” and “The River Banks of La Sarthe” were made from the photo, using this technique and became these final paintings.
I urge you to try the thumbnail technique, no mastery needed, just a small piece of paper and a pencil!
