Rainbow Days

Piece description from the artist

My pieces contradict reality when a tree is bigger than a skyscraper or when they exist on a floating crystal in the sky. I blend various culture's architecture with flora from around the world on those crystal islands up there. It is my conception of utopia. This piece in particular was made in memory of one of the most ideal times in my life—when I lived in the Bay Area. From the first moment I visited San Francisco as a child, I knew I was going to live there. It was one place that I felt like I could be myself. I loved the variety of daily experiences and interactions. I loved the melding of cultures, foods, and architecture in one tiny 7 mile island. This piece is meant to capture the joy of living in a place where some of the best parts of cultures collide.

About Nash Bellows

Council Bluffs, IA

Nash Bellows grew up in Huntington Beach, a small surf town in Southern California. She spent her childhood in the ocean with neon bikini clad locals and tourists, as well as playing computer games and watching cartoons under giant quilts crafted by her great-grandmother.
Those elements of landscape, technology, pattern, craft, and color are the underlying aesthetic and conceptual themes in her abstract paintings, collages, and digital drawings. With these pieces, she asks the viewers to question the surrounding ideologies and qualifications of High and Low art by using color, form, and imagery stemming from pop culture.
Bellows found her love of color and painting in her final semesters of studying printmaking at Sonoma State University. She continued painting at San Francisco State where she received her Masters of Fine Arts. Currently, she is living in Council Bluffs, Iowa and working in Omaha, Nebraska.
