Bild no. 6
Piece description from the artist
This series of paintings uses color, form, and texture in a method akin to building. Bild is both German for “picture” and a play on words for how the paintings are constructed. Walter Gropius quipped in the formation of the Bauhaus manifesto that "The final goal of all artistic activity is architecture." My aim is to turn that around in a fractured, abstracted way, turning architecture into a purer form stripped of function. In each work the physical limitations and possibilities of the medium and materials are explored. The primary goal is to reference enough of the built environment to appear oddly familiar. Stripped of specific locations, architectural elements are conceptually used to reveal the versatility of paint as a material and exploit the limitations of pictorial surface.
