Jeffrey Hummel is a contemporary fine art photographer from Wyoming. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in literature and philosophy and a Master’s degree in medieval history.
Jeffrey’s photography is an art of observation; finding something extraordinary in an ordinary place. He is influenced by the works of Julia Cameron, Man Ray, Robert Mappelthorpe, Robert Farber, and Joyce Tenneson. He has also had a long fascination with vintage photographic processes such as ambrotypes and collodial wet plate techniques, and that fascination is reflected in a number of his photographs.
Believing that seeing is a creative process, Jeff works under two Buddhist inspired precepts: firstly, that there be simplicity of composition, and secondly, that he maintains a level of receptivity that frees him from premeditated ideas. If successful, he says, then it allows him to represent what he sees in such a way that others may share in it.
His work is on permanent display at the Wyoming State Museum.
